Restaurants are required to display their prices on the inside and outside of their premises. Prices must he shown as inclusive of VAT (service is included), and you should be given a bill before you pay. Tipping is optional and at the customer's discretion.
The law banning smoking in all public places came into force on 1st January 2008 in cafes and restaurants. From this date, these premises will become entirety non-smoking, with the exception of open-air terraces. In the meantime, each establishment is required to offer a nonsmoking area in which you can ask to be seated. Finally, establishments selling beverages are not allowed to permit entry to under 16 years old unless they are accompanied by an adult, or serve alcohol to under 18 years old.
Some restaurants serve food all day, but standard service hours usually last from 12 pm to 3 pm at lunchtime, and 7 pm to 10 pm at dinnertime. There are no cover charges, and bread and a jug of tap water are normally provided free of charge. Children's menus with smaller and less expensive dishes are also often available. |
